Chennai, June 20: The Pyramid Saimira group has been selected by the jury of the Madras Management Association (MMA) for the prestigious MMA Award for Managerial Excellence for 2008.The award, called the 7th MMA Award for Managerial Excellence 2008, will be given away at a function in Chennai on June 27, 2008.Congratulating group chairman and managing director, P S Saminathan, MMA president S Gopal said the award was for the company’s work in the services sector category.The award will be given away during the valedictory preceding MMA’s 52nd annual general meeting scheduled for Friday, 27 June 2008, in Chennai.In the communication to Saminathan, Gopal requested him to present “their best practices in a seminar on ‘Managerial Excellence’ which precedes the awards function for a duration of about 20 to 25 mins followed by interaction with the audience for about 10 minutes”.

Pyramid Saimira has bagged the distribution rights of Rajinikanth's forthcoming venture 'Kuselan' after paying a big price of Rs 65 crore.
Though several corporate houses tried to take the distribution rights of the movie, Pyramid Saimira clinched the deal paying Rs 65 crore.
'Kuselan' stars Rajinikanth, Pasupathy, Nayantara and Meena in the lead roles. Produced by Kavithalaya, the movie is directed by P Vasu.
A remake of Malayalam hit 'Katha Parayumbol', the movie has musical score by G V Prakash.

Pyramid Saimira Theatre Ltd has announced that it will be producing a total of 52 films this year. The Company has already completed 6 films in various languages and more than 7 films are under production in various languages. Apart from the film production, the Company also is engaged in producing content for Television and other modes. It has currently more than three hours of TV content production per day. Towards this, the Company announced the production of the first ten Tamil films this fiscal year, thereby becoming the first production house in the world to commence the production of ten movies on one day. By Nayanima Basu, Mumbai, March 28: Indian entertainment major Pyramid Saimira Group is planning to open a total of 2,000 movie screens, a mix of multiplex and individual ones, across India by 2010. It has also made a foray into the Chinese entertainment industry, the fastest growing in the world.
The Chennai-based company, which controls about 60-65 percent of the south Indian film market, is planning to increase its presence in the exhibition space mainly in northern India while further consolidating its position in the south."We are planning to open 800 screens across the entire north India, out of which 500 would be multiplexes and 300 individual screens," P.S. Saminathan, managing director of Pyramid Saimira Theatre Ltd, told IANS here."We may also look into buying some and converting them into multiplexes," he said, adding that the company plans to open a total 2,000 screens by 2010."The remaining 1,200 would be in various corners of southern India."For this the company has earmarked about Rs.4-4.5 billion to be invested in phases. It also plans to achieve a turnover of Rs.7-8 billion in the current fiscal year of 2007-08, up from Rs.1 billion in 2006-07."For our multiplexes we will be mostly focusing on tier-II and tier-III cities as there is less competition and more management skills are required," he added.The company forayed into the Chinese entertainment and media industry last week for exhibition, distribution and production businesses."We are probably the only private sector company to operate there. It is the fastest growing entertainment industry in the world. We intend to set up the infrastructure there, create local content and look at other activities," Saminathan said."The China market is an extremely regulated one but is infested with piracy. But there is less of competition for us and we have the government's support so I am sure it will turn out to be a good business proposition."The group also bagged a satellite broadcasting deal with Britain-based Spize TV to venture into the broadcasting sector."With Spize TV agreement coupled with the Chinese foray, we plan to introduce 100 channels in the next one year," he said. Chennai, Feb. 12 On the heels of its acquisition of the UK-based Aurona Technologies, Pyramid Saimira Theatres Ltd is on the verge of acquiring another company in that country, PSTL’s Managing Director, Mr P.S. Saminathan, told Business Line today.
He said the company to be acquired is a theatre chain that owns 70 screens in the UK without divulging its name. However, the size of the deal is “around $100 million.”
Asked how the deal would be funded, Mr Saminathan said that raising money abroad for acquisitions is not a problem.

The Chennai-based Pyramid Saimira has drawn up plans to raise $1 billion abroad to fuel its various activities. Half the amount is for providing the initial corpus for a Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) the company would float. The REIT intends to buy 500 movie theatres.The other $500 million is for distribution ($200 million), production ($100 million), investment in technology mainly in the areas of post-production and animation ($100 million), and the rest for other activities such as infrastructure development in its theatres.

Pyramid Saimira closed 2006-07 with a turnover of Rs 164 crore and a net profit of Rs 13.43 crore. A company of that size raising Rs 4,000 crore?

In response to this, Mr Saminathan drew attention to the company’s performance in the first nine months of the current year — turnover was Rs 502 crore and net profit Rs 60.98 crore. In the third quarter alone, the turnover was Rs 233 crore and net profit Rs 30 crore, which were five times and six times respectively over the achievement in the corresponding period of last year.

Pyramid Saimira, Mr Saminathan said, has been growing aggressively, straddling the movie market with content generation (or film production) and exhibition — in the process, eliminating the middle-man, the distributor.
Last year, the company’s production subsidiary, Pyramid Saimira Production International Ltd, produced 13 films. Pyramid Saimira Theatres distributed about 100 films.

“To raise a billion dollars abroad is not a problem,” says Mr Saminathan. Since the Pyramid Samira group — comprising the parent company, Pyramid Saimira Theatres Ltd, and its seven subsidiaries — has operations in Malaysia, Singapore, the US and the UK, a substantial part of the funds raised would be spent abroad.
The company plans to produce 40 films next year, Mr Saminathan said.

Pyramid Saimira has acquired a majority stake in Aurona Technologies, a game development and interactive entertainment software company headquartered in London. They develop content for the PS2, Nintendo DS and the PC. Also, they own the IP of a location based wireless social networking community, and the IP for six mobile games...not much.

P S Saminathan, MD of the Pyramid Saimira Group is bullish, saying that “This marks the entry of Pyramid Saimira in the high-growth, high-margin animation & gaming Industry.” Last year, the group had announced plans for a new media subsidiary, and IPTV services; they operate digital theatres (around 256 screens in Tamil Nadu), and radio stations. They’d also announced plans to set up a content fund for $25 million and would raise $150 million in India. The company says that acquisition will help the company expand into post-production, animation and gaming, and utilize their existing content library. Aurona has a development centre in Hyderabad, and an office in Los Angeles. Aurona will be integrated into Pyramid Saimira Production Services Ltd, and Santosh Pillai, CEO of Aurona Technologies will join the latter a Director.

Update: The idea appears to be to set up gaming zones in theatres. Saminathan has told the Hindu: “Of the six million sq ft area we have in 800 screens, only 2.2 million is being used for box office. We will set up interactive gaming facilities in at least 100 theatres in the next few months.”

The company said in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange that it has acquired a majority stake in the video games and interactive entertainment software company and the new entity would be known as Pyramid Saimira Production Services Ltd.

"We are extremely happy to announce this strategic acquisition of Aurona Technologies Ltd. This marks the entry of Pyramid Saimira in the high-growth, high-margin animation and gaming industry," Pyramid Saimira Group Managing Director P S Saminathan said.

The group has access to a huge content library and would be able to cross-exploit the content properties. The acquisition brings not only the existing knowledge and customer base, but also high quality management bandwidth, with international exposure, he added.

Aurona Technologies Ltd CEO Santosh Pillai would take over as the Director of the new entity.

The company is also planning to enter the European market to cash in on the available potential and achieve synergy.

"This acquisition is in keeping with our vision at Pyramid Saimira to be the world's leading entertainment company. This also marks our entry into the European market. With this, Pyramid Saimira Group is present in 3 continents," Pyramid Saimira Director N Narayanan said.

HYDERABAD: The Pyramid Saimira group has acquired close to 100% of UK-based animation and console game developer Aurona Technologies for an undisclosed amount.

PS Saminathan, managing director, Pyramid Saimira said: “We are set to emerge the world’s largest theatre chain company soon and look forward to gaming consoles at our theatres as a major revenue earner.”

Aurona, which has its development centre in Hyderabad, provides product development solutions and develops games for console, PC, handheld and online games for clients on the outsourced model.

While this marks the company’s entry into the fast-growing gaming business, including a future intention to focus on mobile gaming content with 10-15 native games, the main objective is to utilise the extra space at our 800- odd theatres by setting up the gaming arcades, Saminathan said.

While the box office takes up about 2-2.5 million sq ft of the total 6 million sq ft at the 800 odd theatres, there is a lot of space still left for utilisation for other businesses like food and beverages, promos etc.

“Or average ticket price is very low as we are more focused on volumes and not on margins. Therefore we expect the walkins into the our other associated businesses on the premises,” he said.

Meanwhile, Pyramid has kicked off plans to set up a Digital Media centre as an SEZ this year.

The SEZ, which will be spread across 25 acres, will have a headcount of 10,000; the company is scouting for space in Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore, a company official said.

Santosh Pillai, CEO, Aurona Technologies will continue in his incumbent role and will also take over as Director, Pyramid Saimira Production Services.

MUMBAI: Pyramid Saimira Theatre Ltd (PSTL) has acquired majority stake in the UK-based Aurona Technologies Ltd.

Headquartered in London, Aurona Technologies is a leading video games and interactive entertainment software company. Aurona Technologies CEO Santosh Pillai will take over as director of the company.

Pyramid Saimira (PSG), a fast growing entertainment group, today said it had acquired a majority stake in Aurona Technologies Limited (ATL), a video game and interactive entertainment software company headquartered in London.

ATL CEO Santosh Pillai would continue in his incumbent role and take over as Director of Pyramid Saimira Production Services Limited, ''to integrate the operations of both the companies,'' a company release here said.

ATL has a development centre here and a representative office in Los Angeles. The company delivers full game development from India for platforms such as Sony Playstation 2 Console, Nintendo DS and PC. Pyramid Saimira Group Managing Director P S Saminathan said it had acquired nearly 100 per cent of ATL from the promoters and a UK-based hedge fund to enter the high-growth, high-margin animation and gaming industry currently estimated at 35 billion US Dollar.

PSG plans to acquire two to three companies in 2008 to enlarge its footprint. ''We are focusing on creating a world class vertical on post production-animation-gaming and this acquisition brings not only the existing knowledge base and customer base, but more importantly, high quality management bandwidth, with international exposure,'' he said.

PYRAMID SAIMIRA ACQUIRES UK-BASED AURONA TECHNOLOGIES

Mumbai, Jan 24 (PTI) Entertainment firm Pyramid Saimira Theatre today said it has acquired UK-based Aurona Technologies for an undisclosed amount.

The company said in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange that it has acquired a majority stake in the video games and interactive entertainment Software Company and the new entity would be known as Pyramid Saimira Production Services Ltd.

Aurona Technologies Ltd CEO Santosh Pillai would take over as the Director of the new entity.

The company is also planning to enter the European market to cash in on the available potential and achieve synergy.

Aurona Technologies Ltd has a development centre in Hyderabad. The company delivers full game development from India for platforms such as Sony Playstation 2 console, Nintendo DS and PC.

Sources close to the deal said Pyramid Saimira will buy the stake for 20 mln usd but did not disclose the size of the stake.

In a regulatory filing, Pyramid Saimira said the deal marks its entry into the high-growth, high-margin animation and gaming industry, and it hopes to leverage its existing large content library with this acquisition.

UK-based Aurona Technologies develops games for various platforms, is engaged in developing content distribution platforms for entertainment companies and develops software and e-learning solutions.

At 1.20 pm, Pyramid Saimira Theatre Ltd shares were trading 4.85 pct lower at 315 rupees on the BSE, under performing the larger market, which was down 1.60 pct at 17,312.13.

Coimbatore: Pyramid Saimira Theatre Ltd opened the group?s first signature South Indian restaurant styled Brahmin?s Kitchen, at the premises of the Priyadarshini Theatre in Palakkad in Kerala on Friday.

P.S. Chennai-based entertainment company Pyramid Saimira Group will invest 84 million ringgit (about $25 million) in 2008 to upgrade its movie halls in Malaysia to theatres with digital screens.
The group's managing director P.S. Saminathan said the expansion plan included adding hotels to its entertainment complexes.He said the company with commercial interests in Singapore and the US has earmarked entertainment-savvy Malaysia as an important base for its fast-expanding business.
Besides running 51 movie halls, the company has the second largest theatre chain in Malaysia and is involved in producing Malay, Chinese and Tamil films - IANS

Pyramid Saimira Theatre and Jnanabanu visual media, alternate culture and communication production unit, together launched a unique movement called the one reel movement, for the purpose of promoting new tastes and new talent in cinema.Films with the duration of only one reel will be produced and exhibited in a chain of theatres. The 10 minutes long films will feature new ideas and new talent. The one reel will be shown before the main film in the theatres as a bonus film to the audiences. Both the audiences and the film industry are expected to benefit from the fresh ideas and fresh talent that would emerge from the one reel movement. The concept has been made possible thanks to the company having under its command a chain of hundreds of theatres.The first one reel film will be screened on Dec. 28, 2007. On the same day exactly 112 years ago, the first cinema was shown to the public by Lumiere brothers. That was also an one reel running for less than ten minutes with several short visuals each running for a few seconds. To mark this commemoration, 112 Tamil writers will be inaugurating the first show of the film on this day simultaneously in 112 theatres in different places of Tamilnadu.The first film of the one reel movement to be shown on Dec. 28, 2007 is `Thirumathi James Ippodhu Enna Seyya Vendum` directed and produced by Jnani based on a short story by eminent Tamil writer Dilip Kumar. Cinematography is by P S Dharan dft. Editing is by I P Sivamathi dft. Music is by Anil N C. Artistes Rohini and Neelson have performed this ten minutes long film with just two shots taken in one single take. While Neelson speaks throughout the film, Rohini has no dialogue at all. More than seventy five pereent of the crew are budding talents. The same principle of encouraging new talents will be followed in subsequent creations. Jnani will be producing the first six one-reel films after which scripts from newcomers will be selected for production from new comers.The One Reel Movement now being launched in Tamil, will subsequently be introduced in other languages also - Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi and English.Shares of the company gained Rs 0.9, or 0.21%, to settle at Rs 420.60. The total volume of shares traded was 54,891 at the BSE. (Thursday)

We have come across film premiers, film promotions and award functions. But when it came for the promotion of the film “Evano Oruvan” Pyramid Saimira Productions Limited thought in a different way!

They thought of taking the subject of the film towards the public in a novel manner. While it is common to witness special forums and debates discussing social issues, Pyramid Saimira took the theme of the film for a heated yet humour tinged debate.

On 15th Decmeber 2007, the Kalaivanar Arangam was filled with eager viewers as the Pattimandram titled “Evano Oruvan Urruvaagak Kaaranam, Thani Manitha Kobama? Ottu Moththa Samuthayama?” (Who is responsible for provoking avenging angels – an Individual’s wrath or Society as a whole?) took off, at around 7 PM.

The multi-faceted Actor Sathyaraj facilitated the debate where two teams comprising of eminent Tamil speakers argued on the said topic. Trichy R. Maadhu led the team that supported the theme ‘Individual Wrath’. His team members were Uma Maheshwari from Kovai and Manikandan. Lawyer Sumathi led the team that argued on the subject, ‘Society as a whole’, together with her team members Satheeshkumar and Mohanasundaram.

Mr. Gnani was also a part of this event. Director cum Actor Seeman, Actors Madhavan and Sangeetha spoke at the event. Mr. Sathyaraj proved his mettle as a judicious facilitator flavouring his talks with lot of comical elements that had the audience in a hilarious rapture. The director of the Pyramid Saimira Group Mr. Narayanan gave the welcome address and the Creative Team, headed by Mrs. Subhaa Venkat, National Creative Head of Pyramid Saimira Productions Ltd, organized the event.

The debate show, which was undoubtedly a novel endeavor, brought out many thought provoking elements that gave a whole new meaning to the movie and took it to a higher level. No doubt Actor Madhavan was overwhelmed to witness the reception his first production had gained. Judge Satyaraj gave the final verdict by saying that it was the cast and crew of the film who were the ultimate winners for creating such a good movie.

ON April 24, next year, Pyramid Saimira Production Ltd is set to create a record in the history of Sandalwood.Three brothers Shivarajkumar, Raghavendra Rajkumar and Puneeth Rajkumar are set to act in a movie Om, directed by an upcoming director Ravi Srivatsa.Perhaps, it is the first time that three brothers are acting in a movie in South India. The Pyramid Saimira production Ltd plans to invest Rs 5 to Rs 7 crore in this movie.

It is not Om –II

Director Ravi Srivatsa made it clear that this latest Om is not an improvised version of the movie Om in which Shivarajkumar and Prema were the lead pair. It was directed by Upendra 12 years ago.‘‘I am yet to prepare its script and write dialogues. I had narrated only the synopsis to Shivarajkumar. I requested him to convince his brothers to act in this movie. He has considered my request and convinced Raghavendra Rajkumar and Puneeth Rajkumar.He is like my brother and the credit must go to him for making it possible because I have never dreamt of sharing the stage with the three brothers,’’ says Ravi Srivatsa.

Om is a dictionary

Ravi Srivatsa said that he got inspiration from Om to direct movies such as Deadly Soma Dammidhre Bhaaro and Rajeev. ‘‘I have seen the movie Om several times.It is like a dictionary for me. I learnt a lot from that movie and it helped me to direct movies,’’ explains Ravi.

Bollywood director Rajkumar Santoshi says that the event augurs well for the Sandalwood. He said that the event would remain in the history of Sandalwood as a memorable one.‘‘Though I have not seen many Kannada movies, I heard about many successful movies. It is good to see three brothers in one movie.I wish good luck for the three brothers and director Ravi Srivatsa,’’ says Santoshi, whose movie Halla Bhol is set to be released next month.

Raghavendra Rajkumar has said that they have missed their father late Dr. Rajkumar. It is said their mother Smt. Parvathamma Rajkumar has blessed them and wished them good luck for this movie.‘‘We feel the absence of our father late Dr Rajkumar. Had he been alive, he would have been the first person to be happy. Our mother has performed pooja and blessed us in the morning,’’ says Raghavendra Rajkumar.

I am happy

Power Star Puneeth Rajkumar has said that he was very happy to act along with his brothers. He said that he would do justice to his assignment.‘‘I am very happy to get this chance. Though I have acted along with my father and rendered songs for my brother Shivarajkumar’s movie, it is the first time I get a chance for acting with my brothers,’’ explains Puneeth Rajkumar.

No egos

Raghavendra Rajkumar has explained that he had already told the director to lay emphasis on the script and not the artistes.He said that artistes should follow the script than preparing the latter more for the benefit of the former. ‘‘The director is at liberty to make this movie as per the script. There are no demands that all brothers should and must get equal footage in the movie,’’ says Raghavendra Rajkumar.

Starcast

Director Ravi Srivatsa says that he has yet to select the starcast for this movie. He said that there is sufficient time to select the starcast since the movie is slated for launch on April 24, 2008.‘‘I will be in a position to give all the details on the starcast, shooting locations and shooting schedule of this movie by April 24. I can say one thing — that Shivarajkumar, Raghavendra Rajkumar and Puneeth Rajkumar act as brothers in the movie,’’ says Ravi Srivatsa.
